LIBGUIDES - GETTING STARTED: OVERVIEW

This guide will help all faculty and staff create high quality content for new LibGuides.

HELLO AWESOME KENDALL FACULTY!  

Have you thought about creating a subject guide? We would love for you to lend your expertise and share your knowledge with the Kendall community! This guide will help you organize your ideas, show you some examples, and provide you with a checklist to make sure your guide is complete!

PROCESS

We want to make the creation of a LibGuide as easy as possible! Below are the steps we will take to get the guide live as soon as possible!

  • Faculty or staff member will create content. 
  • Content creator will email all content to Librarian
  • Librarian will create LibGuide, check for copyright issues, format to make it look nice and edit content.
  • Librarian will share link to unpublished guide with the content creator to review and approve.
  • Upon approval, the LibGuide will go live!

THINGS TO KEEP IN MIND

Here are a few points to keep in mind as you are creating and gathering the content for each LibGuide. 

  • Get creative! New tools are introduced every day and we want to be as innovative as possible. 
  • Show don't tell - Use images, infographics, videos, and charts to show the user your point rather than long wordy boxes of text.
  • Explore the samples - Take a look at the samples (found in the tabs on the top of the page) to get inspired. LibGuides has a lot of versatility, and the samples can help showcase options you might not have thought about. 
  • Use the template (below) - We have created a template to help get you started. This is just a jumping off point so feel free to get creative!
  • Keep copyright in mind - We can not post anything that violates copyright policy. Please be sure to cite your sources and use images with permission. This includes not using any graphic that is watermarked. Reach out to the library staff if you have any questions! 
  • Remember the F shaped pattern  - Eyetracking visualizations show that users often read Web pages in an F-shaped pattern: two horizontal stripes followed by a vertical stripe.
  • Be resourceful - Chances are you already have an amazing set of tools that you are using in your classroom. Take a look at what you already have created or found and see if it can be of use in a guide.

Download and save this template to your computer. Once you fill in all of the content, send it over to the librarian to get your guide built! Be sure to explore the samples to get inspired! 

TOOLS TO CONSIDER

Here some tools to get you started! Please feel free to email us any great finds you come across!

  • ProProf - A great way to create adaptive quizzes to help you check for understanding. Email us if you would like access to create quizzes and track results! We can also create the quizzes if it would be easier for you.
  • Jing - A free tool that allows you to record and share videos from your computer.
  • PowToon - A free tool to create animated videos.
  • PlayPosit - an online learning environment to create and share interactive video lessons.
  • Creative Commons - A tool that enables the sharing and use of creativity and knowledge through free legal tools.
  • FreeImages - Search over 388,498 free photos. These photos do not need to be cited!
  • Easel.ly - A free tool to create visually interesting infographics.
  • Canva - Make fun infographics easily with this free tool. 
  • Piktochart - Another tool for making infographics.
  • Creative Market - Sign up for six free weekly downloads of ready-to-use design assets.
